The Alternative Story

Step 0 — The Alternative Story
Finding a therapist

Step 0: the step before the first step.

Deciding to start therapy is significant. Even if you're not sure it's the right time, or you don't know what to say, or you've tried before and it didn't stick — that uncertainty is worth bringing with you.

Step 0 is how The Alternative Story makes sure the match is right before your first session even begins. It's a short process, and it costs nothing.

1
Fill the form
About 5 minutes
There are no right or wrong answers. You don't need to have everything figured out — if you're unsure about something, just say so or skip it.
2
Choose how you'd like to be matched
You have two options:
Book a free 15-minute call with the team This isn't therapy — it's a brief conversation to help them understand what you're looking for. Good if you'd like to ask questions before being matched.
Skip the call and be matched directly Your form responses alone are enough. The team will use them to find the right fit.
3
Receive three therapist profiles
Within 3 days
You'll get three profiles with direct booking links so you can choose who you'd like to work with.
Book your first session — this is Step 1.
This is where therapy begins. If none of the suggestions feel like the right fit, write to the team and they'll look again.

Pay-what-you-want slots

All therapists at The Alternative Story offer pay-what-you-want (PWYW) sessions. These slots are reserved for people from historically marginalised communities:

  • People from marginalised caste communities
  • Queer, transgender, and gender non-conforming people
  • People with disabilities

Availability varies by therapist. If you'd like to be considered for a PWYW slot, mention it in the form. The team will be honest with you about availability and wait times.

A few things people ask

Is the Step 0 call mandatory?
No, it's optional. The form alone is enough to get matched.
What if I don't know what I need?
That's common, especially if this is your first time. Just share what feels relevant — what's been on your mind, what prompted you to reach out. You don't need a clear diagnosis or a tidy explanation.
How are therapists matched to me?
It's a human process, not an algorithm. The team considers what you're working through, any preferences you've named, language, budget, and availability when deciding who to suggest.
What if none of the suggestions feel right?
Write to the team. They'll take another look.
Fill the Step 0 form Your responses are confidential and used only to match you with a therapist.
