Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder that impacts your thought patterns, emotions and behavior, and causes significant distress and dysfunction in an individual’s everyday life. BPD is commonly characterized by symptoms such as distorted image of self and others, mood swings (difficulty in regulating emotions), rapid changes in one’s own identity, fear of abandonment, impulsivity and risk behaviors, patterns of dysfunctional relationships, paranoia, feelings of numbness etc.
The causes of this condition are not completely clear, but factors that may play a role include: family history with the condition, brain chemistry, and socioeconomic and environmental factors. BPD most commonly begins in early adulthood, and can be managed with proper support, therapy and, in most cases, medication over time.
